Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon: The Flagship and the Stratofortress, The Super Soldier and the Spartan Warrior, the Streetfight and the Superbrawl, the Bloodsport and the Battalion Commander, the Warrior-General and the Locker Room Leader

Aries is the sign of the Trailblazer, the Daredevil, the Warrior, the Survivor, the Competitor, the Risk-Taker, the Adrenaline Junkie, the “Ass-Kicker” of the Zodiac. Aries’s role is to clear pathways, dive into the unknown, and fearlessly face dangers that would send other signs trembling and turning tail. In nature, Aries is symbolized as the Ram who confronts rivals by ramming its head into them. In medical astrology, Aries is associated with the head. People with their Sun (identity) in Aries thus often identify with “going head to head” against a challenge. The first 5 minutes of the film Top Gun where Maverick insists on “going head to head” with the MIG-28 fighters is a great example of pure Aries energy projected onto the big screen:

Women with heavy Aries influences in their charts tend to be tomboys who are willing to go head-to-head with men or to blaze trails in male-dominated arenas. Actress Lucy Lawless of Xena: Warrior Princess fame, for instance, has both her Sun and Moon in Aries. (Chart)

Moon in Capricorn the Strategist: Instincts for Endurance, Hard Work, Self-Discipline

Capricorn, sitting 90 degrees away from Aries, is is the sign of the Prime Minister, the Authority Figure, the Strategist, the Business Man, the CEO, and the Tycoon. When a person’s Moon (emotional needs) is in Capricorn their emotions “switch on” during times of austerity. This is why the Moon is considered “in detriment” when in Capricorn. Soul-crushing experiences that would break the spirits of other Moon signs are actually emotionally nourishing to the Capricorn Moon. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for instance, is a Capricorn Moon. Arnold’s abilities as a thespian were never his strong suit and his legacy as governor of California has been nothing short of catastrophic but I will say this about the man: his performance in Terminator 2 is one of the greatest expressions of all that is practical, responsible, and relentlessly determined about the Capricorn Moon. Take note of the first 20 seconds of this clip as his cybernetic alter-ego the T-800 climbs over a series of obstacles just like a Mountain Goat, the animal symbol for Capricorn:

Actresses with their Moons in Capricorn in tend to be “grinders” who will simply work their competition into the ground. Hollywood Golden Era legend Joan Fontaine, for instance, is a Capricorn Moon. (Chart) She broke into the film business during the depths of the Great Depression by out-working hundreds of other actresses in a grueling 6-month audition process that was as ruthlessly combative as anything seen in the Terminator franchise of films. Lucille Ball and Susan Sarandon are also Capricorn Moons. Both have excelled in Hollywood because success in the film business requires superhuman levels of self-discipline, something a Capricorn Moon is a natural at.

Aries/Capricorn: Fearlessness Meets Sure-Footedness, Fists of Fury Meet Nerves of Steel

Positioned 90 degrees apart from each other, Aries and Capricorn form what’s known as a “square” aspect. When a person’s Sun and Moon square each other the male side and female sides of their psyche tend to knock heads as their fundamental natures are in conflict. The Aries/Capricorn square is a particularly tough one to reconcile. If not invested in some extremely ambitious external enterprise, the tension between the Risk-Taking Hothead (Aries) and the Rule-Making Hard-Ass (Capricorn) creates an enormous build up of internal pressure that can make the person’s life feel like one trip to the principal’s office after another. There’s a scene in the 1986 film Top Gun where Tom Cruise’s character gets chewed out by his commanding officer that’s a great approximation of the Aries/Capricorn square when operating out of sync. Cruise is the Aries, his commanding officer the Capricorn:

Now they do have some things in common. Consider, for instance, the similarities between their respective animal symbols. Aries’s animal totem is the ram, known for being fearless. Capricorn’s animal totem is the mountain goat, known for being surefooted. Both animals have horns. Both can survive in pretty austere circumstances. Both will gladly headbutt and/or steamroll right over anybody or anything that stands in their way. These similarities are what make the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing so comfortable in bloodsports such as power politics, big business, Hollywood, or high-level martial arts. It’s within these arenas where Aries’s fists of fury can best sync up with Capricorn’s nerves of steel, where Aries’s capacity for aggression can best blend with Capricorn’s respect for authority.

At its best this combination manages to pair the fighting spirit of an Aries Sun with the strategic instincts of a Capricorn Moon to form a Sun/Moon pairing that is think skinned, self-controlled, highly pragmatic, extremely courageous, business minded, and totally unafraid of confrontation. Of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings, Aries/Capricorn is considered the pairing par-excellence for “true grit and the capacity to battle the elements . . . as well as for anybody who needs to legitimately wage war against the establishment”, to quote astrologer Sue Tompkins. (Source) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) champion turned film star Gina Carano is an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart)

According to astrologers Suzi and Charles Harvey, a metaphoric image for the highest expression of the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing is, “A young soldier is rewarded by the King for exceptional bravery in the cause of freedom and individual rights.” (Source) It’s hard to imagine a more accurate description of Gina Carano than that, both in the very real world of professional fighting and the imaginal world of film. In addition to being “the face of women’s mixed martial arts”, Carano recently made her motion picture debut alongside Michael Douglas as a highly decorated special forces soldier who must display exceptional bravery in her war against the establishment:

According to the Harveys, the strengths of the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing include, “a powerful mixture of risk-taking and caution; total involvement and courageous commitment”. (Source) This combination will “respect the law but just by a hair’s breath”, they write. (Source) Legendary G-man Elliot Ness, famously portrayed by Kevin Costner in the 1987 film The Untouchables, is also an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) There’s few better examples of somebody who displayed “courageous commitment” and “risk-taking” moxie while “respecting the law but only by a hair’s breath” than he did in his fight against the wave of organized crime that had established control over the city of Chicago during the 1920s. (Chart)

Frank Serpico – the whistle-blowing NYPD cop portrayed by Al Pacino in the 1973 film Serpico – is also an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) So too is author Tom Clancy, best known for having penned military thrillers such as The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of all Fears, and Clear and Present Danger. (Chart) Actors do best in roles that line up with their astrological charts. With Elliot Ness, Frank Serpico, and Tom Clancy as some of her Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon astro-twins, Carano is in pretty good company when it comes to projecting as a legitimate action star.

Aries Sun, Capricorn can be as formidable a force in romantic relationships as it is when battling against (or on behalf of) the forces of evil. Astrologer Jacqueline Bigar writes of the the Aries/Capricorn woman, “You are likely to be bold, direct, and animated . . . you are quite direct about sex.” (Source) The Harveys advise this pairing to consider toning down it penchant for confrontation when it comes to matter of the heart. If not, “loved ones may easily feel bruised by you . . .” they warn. (Source) They sure got that one right! Following the release of Haywire, Carano appeared on the Conan O’brien show where she compared sex to a holds barred cage-fight:

That Carano would make such a comparison is no surprise given her high-impact astrological pedigree. Astrologer Stella Hyde tells us that Aries is the sign “most likely to jump start their vibrator with a Ducati motorcycle” while Capricorn is the sign most likely to “be on top of everything . . . and to use a whip to prevent deviationist behavior from over-imaginative partners.” (Source)

Her Venus (planet of love) is in Pisces, the most sensitive of signs and it receives a supportive trine from her Jupiter (planet of expansion) in Scorpio (depth) so there is certainly more to her emotional ecosystem than Ducatis, whips, and professional cage fights. But no Sun/Moon pairing as oriented to blood and iron as Aries/Capricorn is going to want the world to know there lays a super-sensitive, super-sweet Venus/Jupiter trine in water signs a bit deeper in their chart. So we’ll just move on to some of her equally formidable astro-twins.

Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon Astro-Twins: Gina Carano, the Undertaker, the B-52

Carano’s most notable contemporary Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon astro-twin is probably professional wrestler Mark Calaway, best known as “The Undertaker”. (Chart) Terry Bolea, aka “Hulk Hogan”, is probably the best known wrestler among fans but it’s Calaway who is easily the most respected by his fellow wrestlers. For Aries/Capricorn, respect with a capital “R” is the currency of the realm more so than just fame or money. (Although no Aries/Capricorn ever threw public acclaim or fat checks out of bed mind you.) Take a look at this fascinating out of character interview With Calaway where he discusses the business and human resource aspects of the wrestling industry to understand just how important respect is to this pairing:

It’s no surprise that Calaway is considered the “Locker Room Leader” and “The General” by his peers as business management is something the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon individual is a natural at. Astrologer Jefferson Anderson explains why in his 1978 book Sun Sign Moon Sign:

Others respond to what they perceive as great maturity and responsibility, and you are likely to gain much respect and influence among your peers. Those who earn your friendship will probably find themselves lifted to great heights along with you. Loyalty is important to you, and you are not one to forget those who help you reach success.

Professionally, you are best suited to managerial careers . . . you have the executive abilities needed to implement plans and ideas with originality and foresight. (Source)

People with the same Sun/Moon pairing often bear a certain resemblance to each other even if they’re obviously not related by blood. Take a look, for instance, at these screenshots of Carano and Calaway from interviews with MMA correspondent Ariel Helwani of FanHouse.com:

Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon: Gina Carano and The Undertaker

Obviously Carano is a bit easier on the eyes than “The Deadman” himself but astro-twin resemblances are more about the physical ingraining of long term emotional states and behavior patterns than simply looks. In the case of Carano and Calaway, the camera picks up on both a sense of responsibility and a presence of practical formidablity, the exact traits the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing is known to possess.

Aries/Capricorn is one of the top five combos that you can trust to come up in the clutch at any type of “main event”. To illustrate: Calaway has been main-eventing Wrestlemania for nearly 20 years and thus more or less carrying the wrestling industry on his back since Hulk Hogan went into semi-retirement. Carano’s last fight in 2011 was the first female main event in MMA pay per view history and thus had riding on it the perceived financial viability of an entire industry. Aries/Capricorn natives who go into law will exhibit the same clutch abilities in the courtroom, those who go into teaching will be able to perform just as admirably within in the most pressure packed of classroom. Those who go into things like construction, contracting, or home renovation will be able to get absolutely massive jobs completed under the most demanding of deadlines. This pairing can be brash and brute but absolutely nothing will rattle it when under “main event” type pressure.

Carano and Calaway have a mutual “main eventing” astro-twin that bears mentioning: the B-52 Stratofortress. Designed to deliver nuclear weapons and first flown by Boeing on April 15th, 1962 the B-52 Sis an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon (Chart)

Sure, if the world ever ends in a horrifying nuclear apocalypse there’s an excellent chance the B-52 will have played a major role but let’s not dwell on the negative shall we? The truly amazing thing about the B-52 is that sixty years after its first flight it’s still in service. In fact, according to a recent article at CNet.com, the U.S. Air Force expects the B-52 to be in service until at least the year 2040. (Source) That tells you something about the Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon pairing’s combination of both fighting spirit and staying power.

There does, by the way, seem to be some correlation between this Sun/Moon pairing and a preoccupation with the apocalypse be it by nuclear weapons or environmental catastrophe. Al Gore, for instance, is an Aries Sun, Capricorn Moon. (Chart) Curiously enough, Calaway looks like a stunt-double for one of the four horseman of the apocalypse while Mrs. Carano admitted in a recent interview that she’s been fascinated by the end of the world since her high school years:

For all the fortress type toughness seen throughout Carano’s chart, her North Node (destiny) is in Cancer, the sign of the Great Mother. Cancer is the sign of food and family, nurturing and caring, emotional intelligence and heartfelt tears. This means her destiny is tied up with either literal motherhood or figurative motherhood, nurturing others or nurturing herself. At the very least she’s served as the equivalent of a “God-Mother” to a generation of young women who now have an example of a female who kicks ass (Aries) while exuding class (Capricorn).

    Ha, love this! Carano and I were born on the same day in the same year. Both of us have our Aries sun/Cap moon square forming a T-square to both Saturn & Pluto in Libra (as well as Mars retrograde in Libra, though not square or opp by degree). Mix that Scorpio Jupiter in there and you’ve got a woman who just runs too hot to handle. I’m stuffed to the gills with riots and revolutions that *are* probably handled most healthily with mixed martial arts, haha.

    @Cait
    it’s always interesting to see who your astro-twins are and how their lives – even if just expressed in their art – have mirrored your own.

    @Cait
    I think that Sun opposite Pluto is a powerful aspect. I also have a T square between Aries Sun and Pluto in Libra. But my moon is in Cancer conjunct Saturn. I think it takes on some Capricorn features at times. But my Mercury conjunct Jupiter in Pisces softens the edges a bit. lol
