Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Sagittarius: The Freelance Hitwoman, the Cowboy Vigilante, and the Enemy of the State (Astrological analysis of the Paula Broadwell CIA sex scandal, “It’s not paranoia if they really are after you”)

In the original incarnation of my Sun/Moon profile on Scorpio/Sagittarius I wrote, “This is the Sun/Moon pairing most likely to be designated an ‘enemy of the state’ in spirit if not in action”. (Source) That may have been a bit of an exaggeration but not by too much. While few Scorpio/Sagittarius individuals will ever be considered actual “enemies of the state”, this pairing definitely possesses a major “Cowboy Vigilante” streak that often lands it in pitched battles with the powers that be. Turns out Paula Broadwell, the Lt. Colonel turned author who was having an affair with David Petraeus (director of the CIA) is a Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon. (Chart) The title of her biography of Petraeus is entitled All In, the multiple meanings of which you can decipher on your own:

Astrologer Carolyn Reynolds writes of the Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon female, “. . . she fares well whatever the climate because she can survive. This one will hunt and fish with you. You can take her to Africa and she’ll out shoot you and the rest of the hunters.” (Source) No kidding. In addition to having served as a special operations command officer, Broadwell has (or had) a side gig working as a firearms demonstrator for the high-end automatic weapons manufacturer KRISS. Here’s a screenshot of her “out shooting the boys” taken from one of the company’s promotional videos:

Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon women will often “outshoot the boys” to quote Carolyn Reynolds. Photo: KRISS

You can see the entire video here. Broadwell makes her appearance beginning at 1:36.

As Broadwell’s curriculum vitae illustrates, Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon is one of the most action oriented of the 144 Sun/Moon pairings. If you look at the symbols for each sign you’ll notice they both center around the theme of “attack”. Scorpio is symbolized by the Scorpion, the Snake, and the Eagle – all deadly predators who thrive within extremely hostile environments. Sagittarius is symbolized as a wild haired centaur-archer armed with a quiver full of flaming arrows. Pair the two together and you have a Sun/Moon pairing that’s predisposed to a life of high speed adventure and high stakes confrontation. Actor Charles Bronson, best known for portraying freelance hitmen, vigilante cowboys, and other battled-hardened characters who neither give or expect quarter, is a Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon. (Chart)

Take a look at this photo of Broadwell, taken next to a large caliber machine gun in Afghanistan, and see if you don’t notice a striking resemblance to Mr. Bronson.

Bronson and Broadwell may be extreme versions of this Sun/Moon pairing but they are fundamentally representative of its capacity for self-preservation amid the most extreme of situations. Even those Scorpio/Sagittarius individuals who aim their broad intellectual and physical arsenals at advocating for non-violence will often find themselves engaged in legal, social, or political confrontations of absolutely ferocious proportions. The freelance investigator hired to compile blackmail dossiers on high ranking executives is as much a Scorpio/Sagittarius type as Bronson and Broadwell. So too are the attorney, author, or filmmaker who find work taking on the Monsantos and Goldman Sachs of the world.

This pairing is also one of the most ardently committed – sometimes fanatical – of the 144 Sun/Moon combinations. Astrologer Bill Tierney says natives of this combination often have “a touch of crusader with militant undertones in them . . . they have lots of guts and need something vast and all-consuming at which to aim themselves”. (Source) Broadwell is likely in a state of complete psychic shock at this time as her entire life has been a vast, all-consuming, totally-committed crusade aimed at serving, protecting, and doing everything right by “the system”. From being both the valedictorian and the homecoming queen of her high school class to serving 15 years active duty in the Army to getting a Master’s degree from Harvard, she probably never imagined there would come a day when twelve FBI agents would be searching (raiding?) her house at one a.m. in the morning while a news crew films outside:

The military-government circles Broadwell moves in are still 1,000% a boys club, one with with serious leanings towards religious fundamentalism and Victorian era moral standards. That means whatever the real reason for this scandal, she’ll be the one taking all the heat for it. Petraeus will simply lay low for 6-to-12 months before sliding into a high paying executive gig at a large military contractor. The situation will not resolve so smoothly for Broadwell. While she’s not an actual enemy of the state, either in action or in spirit, she is now likely to be treated as a pariah both professionally and socially.

To make her situation even less enviable, she probably won’t be getting much in the way of support from her fellow female soldier/scholars as they’ll want to distance themselves from her as much as possible. Like Will Smith’s character in the 1998 film Enemy of the State, she was “all in” the system now she’s “all out”. Take a look at the trailer for the film and see if you don’t notice some uncomfortably close similarities to Broadwell’s current predicament. Smith’s character even has two sons and an upscale home in the suburbs just like Broadwell:

What’s really strange about Sun/Moon profiles is that the biography of a person will often match the basic plot line of a film with their same Sun/Moon profile in ways that are difficult to chalk up to coincidence. To illustrate: using its premier date as its date of birth, the film Enemy of the State is a Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon just like Paula Broadwell. (Chart)

Want to contemplate something even weirder? According to ABC News, prosecutors are now considering whether or not to charge her with a crime for storing classified documents in her house. (Source) That’s exactly what gets Will Smith in trouble in Enemy of the State. (Although in the film it’s a video tape not a trove of documents.)

Want to contemplate something even weirder than that? In the film it’s Will Smith’s alleged extra-marital affair that provides “the powers that be” leverage against him in their attempt to protect the director of the NSA. Some people have speculated that the entire matter involving Broadwell is being used to protect Petreaus (director of the CIA) from having to testify about the Bhenghazi attacks. That could be the case but I doubt it as it’s also what the gasbags on right wing talk radio are telling the masses. If there’s one thing in this world you can count on it’s that whatever the gasbags on right wing radio are trumpeting is total disinformation. I suspect the real reason for this scandal is something orders of magnitude more sinister than anything to do with Bhenghazi but articulating the logic for my suspicions would take an entire article in and of itself.

Using its premier date as its date of birth, Scorpio/Sagittarius is also the same Sun/Moon combination as James Cameron’s 1984 film The Terminator. (Chart) No doubt Broadwell’s bio reads like something out of that film franchise. (Source) She even bears a basic physical resemblance to Linda Hamilton, at least the version seen in 1991 sequel to the original film, and made this quite clear when she won a push up contest during a January 2012 appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

At its best the Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon pairing is high-speed, high-adventure, and every bit as totally committed to its life mission as the Kyle Reese character is to defeating the Terminator in the above scene. At its worst it’s vulnerable to bouts with paranoia, unhinged emotions, and out of control obsessions. Both the Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor characters in Terminator, for instance, are extremely brave but they also both come off as committed to the point of being fanatically unhinged. That level of uncalibrated obsession might be an asset when battling the Terminator or when on a tour of duty in Afghanistan but can be a liability if taken unchecked into other areas of life. Astrologer Jacqueline Bigar writes of this pairing’s potentially extremist leanings when it comes to matters of the heart:

You will learn to deal with your hidden fires, obsessions, and extreme nature. Your fiery Moon only adds an element of the extreme, so even you want to go “whoa” and stop this ride. Your libido is high and needs an outlet. Your creativity could overwhelm you . . . There is a tendency to choose men who are emotionally unavailable. (Source)

Along these lines, it was a series of threatening emails Broadwell sent to a perceived romantic rival that led the FBI to uncover the affair between her and Petraeus. At least that is the “official” version of the story. You don’t need to be a full blown conspiracy theorist to suspect there is much more to this situation than what official channels are telling the public. As the saying goes, “It’s not paranoia if they really are after you.”

Astrologers Suzi and Charles Harvey write of the Scorpio/Sagittarius individual’s deductive prowess, “Your greatest strengths are a probing, questing, analytical mind which is quick to see the large implications of facts . . .” (Source) Broadwell may be a bit too driven for her own good but the woman is no fool. What’s come out in the days since the scandal broke was that she sent emails to a number of high-ranking military officials advising them to be very careful around Jill Kelley. Kelley is the Tampa “socialite” known for throwing ridiculously lavish parties for military brass at her home which not coincidentally is right down the street from the CENTCOM headquarters. (Source) From 600 miles away, Broadwell’s “probing questing, analytical mind” discerned that something about Kelley’s story simply doesn’t add up. Her and her husband, who claim ties to unnamed Middle Eastern leaders, are deep in debt which means their highly vulnerable to all sorts of nefarious “offers”. Meanwhile they’re living way beyond their means and throwing wildly lavish parties for the exact members of the military brass who would be key decision makers in any sort of Middle East military intervention? I’d hazard to guess Broadwell had the capacity to see what “the larger implications of those facts” might be even if her male colleagues didn’t.

I’ll be rewriting the Scorpio/Sagittarius article before the end of the current Mercury Retrograde but in the meantime here’s the original:

Scorpio Sun, Sagittarius Moon: “On a Quest Through the Valley of Death”

At its best, Scorpio/Sagittarius can be an extraordinarily courageous Sun/Moon pairing. That’s good news for Broadwell because her current predicament definitely qualifies as a “valley of death”, maybe not an actual “valley of death” like those she’s seen in Afghanistan but definitely one on personal, professional, and psychic levels. Tomorrow’s eclipse at 21 degrees Scorpio is almost precisely conjunct her Sun (identity) at 18 degrees Scorpio. Eclipses are extremely powerful wildcards, orders of magnitude more significant than New Moons. According to astrologer Suzanne Miller, an eclipse that touches somebody’s Sun as closely as this one touches Broadwell’s may cause the person to “feel like they are walking across a bridge to a brand new place, with no turning back from where they started. The door behind latches, and locks.” (Source) Broadwell’s top-secret clearance has already been revoked. That means she is now locked out of her career as a counterintelligence officer, which just so happens to be the ultimate Scorpionic profession and what her entire identity revolves around.

On top of that her Jupiter (faith) is at 6 degrees Capricorn (government, business), right in the cross hairs of the transiting Uranus/Pluto square. To say her faith (Jupiter) in “the system” (Capricorn) is about to be tested is one hell of an understatement.

Interesting coincidence: ABC News is reporting that apparently she lost her driver’s license while running through a Washington D.C. area park a few days after the scandal hit. (Source) In western astrology, the Sun represents a person’s identity. In modern society the driver’s license serves a similar function as it identifies who you are. In other words, she lost her identity card just as her personal and professional identities are being eclipsed by this scandal. Accidents are sometimes just accidents but often times they’re a person’s unconscious method of expressing something being suppressed from conscious awareness. (A person repressing either their anger or their sex drive may, for instance, find themselves getting in car accidents.) In Broadwell’s case losing her driver’s license could have something to do with her unconscious having realized her identity as she has known it is lost forever.

Her South Node (karmic blowback point) is at 18 degrees Cancer, the most patriotic of signs known for its excessive attachment to home, food, family and country. She’s spent her entire adult life attached to U.S. military which is actually a very Cancerian institution as everybody who joins gets their food/shelter/health care needs met by what amounts to a giant stand-in family. It’s a dangerous profession for sure but, paradoxically, there is a lot of security in it which is what Cancer South Node people are excessively attached to. Her North Node (karmic destiny) is at 18 degrees Capricorn, the sign of hard-won, hard-assed self-sufficiency. Cancer clings to the security of home and family where as Capricorn ensures its needs are met by managing to survive the cold harshness of the outside world all by itself. With her security clearance gone and her military career all but over, Broadwell just got catapulted into her North Node whether she’s ready for it or not.
